Additional information
Read on to find out a little more about me and my painting
I took up painting seriously on retiring from a career in education. During my working life, I had little time to practise my skills but maintained an interest first awakened at school, which culminated in A-level Art.
On retirement, I attended some adult evening and day classes but have mainly worked to develop skills without formal tuition. I continue to lead occasional painting workshops for local art groups.
The main inspiration for my work is the countryside of Britain, especially the South West coast and its fishing harbours. Harbours are fascinating, busy places with their promise of hard work, travel, danger and adventure. They are also peaceful and necessary havens, offering safety and respite for returning adventurers and seafarers
I use notes and sketches in situ but the picture design, choice of approach and execution of the painting usually take place in my studio. I need the time to reflect on my emotional responses in order to capture the atmosphere and essence of the places which have stirred my emotions and embedded themselves in my memory. I enjoy experimenting with new ideas and techniques using watercolour, acrylics and mixed media. The chief characteristics of my work are an emphasis on simplicity of line and shape as well as bold and intense colour. These are, perhaps, the recognisable elements of my style.
I have not developed a settled approach, preferring to seek fresh new methods in order to refine my work and adequately represent the sources of my inspiration.
Recently I have been experimenting more and more with subject matter, different techniques and abstraction. This is reflected in my latest work.
I exhibit regularly in Somerset Arts Works 'Open Studios' event. I have in the past held successful independent exhibitions at Barrington Court and The Meeting House Gallery, Ilminster.
My work can also be seen online at the Gallery South West website.
All my work is for sale. There are framed paintings available, also unframed mounted originals and greeting cards. I am always willing to discuss undertaking commissions. Please contact me either by using the contact form or by telephone 01935 471843.
